The concept of drawing as the language and medium of architecture is not a new idea. “Design Thinking” presents an evolving catalog of drawings by architects and students created as part of the design process. These drawings present architectural questions in an explicit state of the abstract, a condition where many elements are removed, and others are emphasized. The work in the gallery represents these architectural abstractions with a variety of design studies that record architectural ideas and conversations between the designers and their imaginations. Procedurally, the drawings contrast banal renderings and lifeless floor plans, taking the form of purely visual inquiries without ends and solutions that are inventions in real time. The intent of the exhibition is to present the creative energy that exists in design explorations prior to applying any pictorial filters typically required to meet generic ideas of what architecture is or should be.
The exhibition, organized by William Philemon, will run from August 6 through September 6 and is open by appointment. A closing reception will be held September 6 from 6 to 8 PM. To schedule an appointment to view the exhibition, email: wmphilemon@gmail.com.
The 2024 Organizer Series at Hodges Taylor is programmed from a selection of proposals received through an open call for projects.
